Kokeshi Dolls were originally hand carved by farmers in northern Japan as tokens of love and friendship for their family and friends. Kokeshi have developed from a simple toy into a modern craft and are now
recognised as one of the traditional folk arts in Japan. These beautiful, brightly
coloured wooden dolls are irresistibly cute and combine a typically simple yet stylish Japanese design with a distinctive, contemporary feel.
From a collection of Japanese kokeshi
dolls we feature that are largely handmade from cherry or
mizuki trees using traditional methods and usually feature girls' faces and gorgeous floral designs. Every doll is given its own name by the craftsman who lovingly created it ensuring that every kokeshi doll radiates its own individual spirit!
